It is not necessary that any one will be successful in any field and at any time, since success depends on several factors. This is equally applicable to the field of consultancy. One person after his retirement offered consultancy services, based on his experience, in the city where he had settled down. But there were no takers, due to inadequate contacts in the new station, the expertise being general in nature and not being much relevant and special for the industries & organizations in the area. On the other hand, another person offered consultancy services in the same station, from where he retired and he was comparably better placed in the field. Also when the consultant is new and young, there is an impression that he has very little experience and thus he does not command much respect in this field. Networking is generally found to be very useful in such cases. It does not mean that consultancy does not have success. Working in a group, preferably with experienced persons, helps a lot in getting not only success but tremendous success. This means that a lot depends on the way we handle the situations, manage the tasks and the people. If quality and timely completion of works and good human relations are maintained, success should not be far away.
A Consultant is a person who is an expert, having wide knowledge in a particular field, who is used to help in solving a problem. In this manner, a person or business can get access to higher levels of expertise. There are several types of consultants, wide areas of consultancy and various methods of their working. A Consultant may work on temporary basis for multiple and changing clients, charging each case on its merits and work involved or work in an organization but also be available for consultation by other organizations. The consultant may work from his own office or be at the site of the client and their process of hiring and the modes of payments may also be different. Consultancy as a profession has its positive & negative points. In any field, a person should have relevant knowledge & experience, before he can offer consultancy services. A young entrant to this field should have formal training in class room and on-the-job, besides experience in practical applications. A lot however depends on the knowledge, experience, ability, handling, performance and relationships of the individual consultant. Also the results may vary from one organization to another. Thus there is uncertainty & variation of work-load from time to time. Work will come only when good results are achieved for the clients. The consultant has therefore, to work very hard, get results, continue to update his knowledge & develop new & useful services for the clients. Also it is possible that after completion of the assignment by the consultant, there may be failure or flaw in the results. This may be due to wrong advice/actions by the consultant or incorrect implementation/actions by the client. These cases should be examined properly & all concerned must learn from such instances, for taking corrective measures for future.
