LEADERSHIP IN AN ORGANIZATION

Standard

Basically a leader should have the ability to impress, influence and
mould his subordinates, followers and others concerned to accept,
follow and implement his thoughts, ideas and proposals. In my
opinion, that situation is best, when we can motivate a person to work
willingly on his own. However, a leader can use different types of methods
including using coercion or giving of various lucrative offers, for obtaining results. But, a good leadership should properly arrange to select, train initially & periodically, ascertain and allocate suitable areas of working, provide reasonable package, perks and motivation, be honest, transparent, balanced and fair in all dealings of salary raise, bonus, training, promotions, posting and managing and make the persons feel that the organization is theirs,
more than that of the leader. This culture is likely to lead to fast and certain success of the organization. Though for obtaining results, for leadership, there are several other factors also, some of which may be in our hands and some beyond. At least we must do our best in the areas where we can.

ACTIONS WHICH AMOUNT TO PLANNING FOR FAILURE

Standard

We always talk of planning for success and achievement, but due to carelessness or some other reasons we may land in failure, in spite of planning. It is preferable to call it planning for failure. Once a group of five persons planned to travel together by train to a destination, but these persons were coming to railway station, from two different locations, in the same city. One group started by Taxi sufficiently in time as per their point of view, but just before the railway station, there was a big traffic jam and they were unable to make any headway for quite some time, in spite of all efforts. Since all the confirmed five tickets were with this group, the complete group was about to miss the train, even though the group of other three persons had already reached the Railway station.  Due to the luggage & distance involved, this group could not leave the taxi and walk down to the Railway station. With God’s grace this taxi could just reach the railway station three minutes before the departure time of the train. Fortunately their coach was just opposite the main gate of the Railway station, they could board the train and then immediately the train departed from the station. One of my friends had the habit of planning in such a way that he would reach barely five minutes prior to the departure time of the train. He would thus generate enough tension for the car/taxi driver and others concerned and generate possibilities of failure.  Sometimes he would just board the train and the train would start moving at that point of time. But I do not know for what reason(s) he could not or would not change his habit. In another case, a person was to get down from the train in the night, at his destination station, but he did not make any arrangements to get up and detrain at the required station in time. He just woke up at a railway station and enquired from his co-passengers if his destination station had come, which indeed had come some time back and the train was about to start again there from, to continue the journey. He decided to collect his items/luggage in a hurry & detrain, which he did, but sadly, he was badly injured in this adventure. For similar reasons of being involved in a traffic jam, one of my friends reached the venue of a meeting, he was supposed to participate in, ten minutes after it was over, resulting in his non-participation in the meeting. Sometimes one of my friends, delays the sending of some important e-mails for some reasons, like obtaining some new and creative ideas in this intervening period. But sometimes this backfires and such a planning fails, as at the time planned, there may be problem with laptop, server, service provider or power supply etc. & sending of e mails may get delayed for quite some time.

One friend of mine visits a dispensary where the timings are 800 AM-100 PM and 130 PM-245 PM. There are number of activities involved in the process at the dispensary like taking token number, consultation with the physician, carrying out X-ray if required, taking of injection or dressing if required, testing of BP if required, collection of prescribed medicines from the medicine store etc. There are queues at every place and it takes quite a bit of time to complete the process. In case one reaches the dispensary around 1130 AM-1200 Noon, it is possible that it may not be possible to complete some portion of the activities and one may have to wait for the lunch break of 100-130 PM to be over. Also after 130 PM, the time available is inadequate. It has been observed that the number of patients in the slot 800 AM-1000 AM is less. The authorities of the dispensary advise the patients to come in this slot. But accepting this suggestion is a big question mark. Some people take it lightly and just shrug it off. So if one is not considering all these points, it may amount to planning for failure. Generally for effective time management, one is advised to make “to do” lists before proceeding for “doing” the works. One person made the list on a plain paper and kept in his shirt pocket. Then he travelled by bus for completion of various planned works, but due to the effect of the wind flow, this list flew out of his pocket, bus window and was out on the road in a jiffy. As it was not possible to get the bus stopped and to travel backwards for its retrieval, he lost the “to do” list. So it was failure on his part. He should have kept it in his pent pocket or in a pocket diary or some such thing, to prevent its loss in this manner. Therefore it goes without saying that, planning should not be done for failure.

ASSOCIATION OF INTUTION AND UNCERTAINTY WHILE DECISION-MAKING

Standard

In the field of management, many decisions are to be taken at short notice, even though they may have far reaching effects subsequently. As a matter of fact, the decisions should be based on data, reports, results of surveys and logical analysis thereof. There are some mathematical/statistical techniques available. Some top management personnel make use of these techniques. But still many use their intuition. Based on his experience, the top person has a feeling about the whole problem and its consequences, which helps him to take a decision, either way. This is a quick method for taking decisions and many persons prefer it. Some of the top persons may even get the decision corroborated by some sort of study for that problem, based on which they may allow earlier decision to continue or to even modify it. This saves lot of time for achieving progress. The success of taking such decision making is based on the confidence of the top management. The mind of the top management should be in a balanced and stable condition, so that even with multifarious, difficult and varying situations, the scenario can be visualized rightly. No doubt there is uncertainty associated with intuition. For that matter, uncertainty in some manner is always associated with many things and events. If we are free of stress or at least having reduced stresses, we are more likely to see the correct path and our decisions are likely to be right in the long run. Best way is logical analysis. The latter sometimes causes diversion due to information overload. A combination of the two is the next best solution. If accuracy of past decisions, based on intuition is good, it is advisable to go ahead similarly and in the bargain, continue to build up the confidence to help in taking decisions in future, in similar or newer situations.

FORGETTING THE PAST AND MOVING FORWARD WITH THE BLESSINGS OF GOD

Standard

Many Indians worship and pray to God, in some form or other. Lot of people worship Lord Shiva. We should have patience and above all, have faith in God, so that the things may become normal and the path of success may become easier. Philosophically yes, life is full of thorns, but there are sufficient roses also. For our concerns, we should have spiritual connections and get blessed with special effects. We definitely need blessings and guidance of God, for resolving our problems in life. We should be close to God, the Almighty, through a Guru.

There are many problems in life, as a result of marriage, which is considered desirable in this world, but it can be considered as a gamble. It is a delicate relationship, with the necessity of confidence and trust between the two persons and the two families, with lot of give and take being involved from both sides. If both are like minded, it is likely to be a successful marriage. There are many cases of failed marriages also, for various reasons, for some of which we may even not be responsible. We must try to save the marriage and not allow it to be broken. This is possible by forgetting and forgiving, by delinking from and forgetting  the past as a bad debt, considering present bad situation as the effect of past karmas, and starting life afresh all over again. These days many grown up children do not look after their parents in their old age, with finance and physical care. The parents continue to suffer a lot.  It is very sad. People appear to have become very selfish. They forget that one day they will also become old and in a similar condition.  Our life is precious. We have many responsibilities.  None of us know our destiny and what is in store for us. Many times we might have faced the hardships in the past, for no fault of ours. But we should keep our balance of mind, since it is said that our thoughts affect our feelings.  But thoughts are affected by several factors which are beyond our control.  We should get adequate education, live our normal life, engaging in a service or business to keep ourselves sufficiently busy and also earning money for the entire family.  But above all, we must get rid of old thoughts.  With the learning from the past, we should think and hope for progress and better days in future.

Strategy for publication of scripts

Standard

Identification of the target is absolutely necessary, for marketing of any product, even though there are other factors as well. But for achieving success, we should have communication with the target at a proper time & place & in a proper manner, when he is receptive and in his own language, if possible. I have a hobby of writing articles, case studies, interviews, book-reviews etc. in English and Hindi languages, from the beginning of my career. As normally expected, my initial efforts were not very successful, since several of my scripts used to be returned back with the compliments of the Editors. Then I made an analysis of my returned articles, as well as the various write ups published in journals, magazines & newspapers in English & Hindi languages. I formulated my strategy based on the following points: (a) For writing on technical matters in Hindi language, there are not many writers (b) The number of technical write ups in English is large enough, which can be translated into Hindi language. (c) Translation of technical write ups is also a technical work. (d) Assessment indicates that both original technical writings and translations into Hindi language have adequate scope. (e) Number of journals for technical publications in Hindi is expected to increase, which will increase the scope still further. My assessment led me to go in for technical writing in Hindi language. Accordingly, I started in right earnest, writing on technical topics in Hindi, in addition to general topics, including original & review writings and translations of write ups published in English, by Indian and foreign authors. While several scripts in Hindi have been published, one of them has been awarded President of India award. But this strategy did not deter my efforts to write in technical and general fields in English language, and a large number of such scripts have also been published and also posted on web site.

ANALYSIS OF CONCENTRATION NEEDED IN DAILY LIFE

Standard

There is a narration in Mahabharata epic about Arjun, concentrating on the eye of the fish as seen on the reflection in water. Yes, it was a case essentially needing deep and single point concentration, for getting certain success. But this type of concentration, in the opinion of the blogger, is not needed in many of the normal happenings in life. Any worker, instructor, driver, reader, student, writer, police man or security guard etc. may have some internal & external disturbances, but does need concentration to a limited extent for his work. A vehicle driver should concentrate on all rules/problems/activities connected with driving the vehicle, as well as on various things & activities happening on the road at that time. He should keep his thoughts on other topics away from him. When some particular activity/work is going on, then as soon as a person gets relevant information which may affect it, he should analyze & use it immediately without keeping it waiting. During piloting of an aeroplane, when the pilot gets some important information, his attention should be immediately drawn to it, for taking immediate appropriate action. The concentration of a designer should be wide enough for understanding, anticipating & highlighting all aspects/problems during manufacture & use of that product.
By deeply concentrating on the present work, a person may perform the work satisfactorily with minimum mistakes, but he is not vigilant of the events happening around him at that time. Such a person may be working under dangerous external situations/circumstances and he may even become a victim or a cause of accident(s). Such a person should be given assurance of full safety from outside hazards and he should feel that someone is worrying about his safety. Thus a person solely engaged in his work, concentrating on a particular topic under consideration, but not remembering that he has also to do some other works like writing an official letter or making a telephone call or visiting an office may cause problems in day to day working. Also in case he does remember it, it means that he is not concentrating fully on his work. We may need different levels of concentration for different works. The limitation of concentration may be adjusted as per the need. We should consider concentration on a topic and taking up other works together, meaning thereby to have concentration, but still not have it fully. It is said that today’s world is that of multi-tasking and that people cannot concentrate or focus on a single goal only. Multi-tasking involves change of focus and reduced reaction time. But more success appears to come from single minded devotion, concentration and passion, since continuous concentration is capable of overcoming many obstacles in our life. Also it is understood that our brain can do one task at a time efficiently. History is replete with many cases of success, where the persons adopted this approach. Also our thoughts are very important in life. We should concentrate on our positive, encouraging and stable thoughts, with negative thoughts not finding any place in our mind. Interest in the work & desire to continue to learn, automatically help in getting concentration on the work. Sometimes when we open our books in student life or technical papers for study & disposal in work life, we are unable to continue due to our being tired, trying to do several things at the same time, lack of interest or inability to concentrate on the subject. If we get involved in imaginary day-dreaming, thoughts of friends or family or other subjects or get restlessness or feelings of tension, we will not be able to complete the works satisfactorily. Meditation increases the ability for better concentration, reduces anxiety & stresses in spite of various factors, by keeping a person away from other disturbances. But it is considered that while doing meditation also, a person should be vigilant enough about external disturbances & dangers & internal depressive factors.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT CONSULTANCY

Standard

It is not necessary that any one will be successful in any field and at any time, since success depends on several factors. This is equally applicable to the field of consultancy. One person after his retirement offered consultancy services, based on his experience, in the city where he had settled down. But there were no takers, due to inadequate contacts in the new station, the expertise being general in nature and not being much relevant and special for the industries & organizations in the area. On the other hand, another person offered consultancy services in the same station, from where he retired and he was comparably better placed in the field. Also when the consultant is new and young, there is an impression that he has very little experience and thus he does not command much respect in this field. Networking is generally found to be very useful in such cases. It does not mean that consultancy does not have success. Working in a group, preferably with experienced persons, helps a lot in getting not only success but tremendous success. This means that a lot depends on the way we handle the situations, manage the tasks and the people. If quality and timely completion of works and good human relations are maintained, success should not be far away.
A Consultant is a person who is an expert, having wide knowledge in a particular field, who is used to help in solving a problem. In this manner, a person or business can get access to higher levels of expertise. There are several types of consultants, wide areas of consultancy and various methods of their working. A Consultant may work on temporary basis for multiple and changing clients, charging each case on its merits and work involved or work in an organization but also be available for consultation by other organizations. The consultant may work from his own office or be at the site of the client and their process of hiring and the modes of payments may also be different. Consultancy as a profession has its positive & negative points. In any field, a person should have relevant knowledge & experience, before he can offer consultancy services. A young entrant to this field should have formal training in class room and on-the-job, besides experience in practical applications. A lot however depends on the knowledge, experience, ability, handling, performance and relationships of the individual consultant. Also the results may vary from one organization to another. Thus there is uncertainty & variation of work-load from time to time. Work will come only when good results are achieved for the clients. The consultant has therefore, to work very hard, get results, continue to update his knowledge & develop new & useful services for the clients. Also it is possible that after completion of the assignment by the consultant, there may be failure or flaw in the results. This may be due to wrong advice/actions by the consultant or incorrect implementation/actions by the client. These cases should be examined properly & all concerned must learn from such instances, for taking corrective measures for future.
